I finally decided at long last to make a table runner and place mats for the dining room.  I have been in dire need of something new on my table for a LONG time.  With four kids, it is hard to keep things bright, shiny, and new, let alone stain free!
Here is the good news about this project:
  •  The materials are super fun designs and very easy to work with.
  • This project we are about to do only took me two hours in the afternoon.  I started and finished this entire project while the little one napped.
  • At the end of this tutorial I am including a coupon so you can also give this a try!

Here is the bad news about this project:
  • My mother stopped by on her way to dinner and completely fell in love with this project! She then proceeded to take my new runner and place mats with her, so I will probably see you at Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts Stores in the check out line.

Now that that is out of the way, lets get started with our project!  You are going to need:
  • 1 yard HGTV HOME Urban Blossom
  • 1 yard HGTV HOME Checkered Past Berry
  • Sewing machine, iron, and an optional lock to keep your mom from coming over to steal it when you finish
Picture Urban Blossom and Checkered Past Berry Measure and cut your fabric to the length and width desired for your table.  I opted to have the runner go the entire length of my table rather than a short runner.  This is just my preference, which is why I am leaving the measurements up to you. Picture Measure and Cut Press the ends of your fabric once cut to your desired measurements. Picture Fold and Press Ends Once you have your edges all pressed, go ahead and do a running stitch all the way around your runner, adding a locking stitch in to keep everything secure.  (You will notice how easy this fabric is to work with, LOVE it.)  Finish the stitch, and then set aside to begin the place mats. Picture Sew Around Edges To measure my place mats, I took an existing place mat and set it on top of my fabric for a pattern.  I then cut roughly 1" - 1.5" around the mat to create the extra fabric for my edges to be pressed and sewn down. Picture Measure and Cut Place Mats Press down your edges. Picture Press Your Edges for Place Mats Sew down your edges and finish, remembering to add your back stitch. All done!
