“You’re My New York” is a song RIVER began writing about two years ago after a relationship he was in, with someone from New York City, fell apart. The similarities between the person and the city they are from, were quite obvious. “On one hand, they excited me and the thought of them thrilled me. But counter to those qualities, they left me feeling slightly crowded, stifled, and looked down on,” he reflects. “But, looking back, I put myself in that position. They were not in the wrong, they just are who they are, like the city itself. When you go there you have to know what to expect. The record is about understanding what your getting into before you commit to it.”
