Review: VEIL #1 from GREG RUCKA and DARK HORSE

Posted on the 04 March 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

Where to begin. Where to begin. How about with a naked woman on the floor of a subway terminal. Yeah. We’ll start there.

That is how the story of Veil begins. This woman awakens in what seems like some sort of trance. Lots of rhyming going on. We see an excessive force of something from her as a gate becomes mangled as she exits. Out there is the city, not to much surprise, everyone is staring at this naked woman roaming the streets. A man comes to what seems like her rescue after a situation almost went down. He gets her some clothes but something happens in the mean time…we get a glimpse at who Veil might really be…or so I think.

Greg Rucka (Wonder Woman, Wolverine, Action Comics, Detective Comics…) talks in a letter at the end of the book about how the character of Veil came to be.

“Veil, as a character, has been with me for twenty years, perhaps longer. Unlike most of my characters, she has always been more a concept than an identity, an idea in search of a story rather than a character waiting for her story to be told.”

The door is wide open in my mind to what Greg can do with the character/story. This book just shows a tiny shard of what can happen and the possibilities are endless to where it can go. The story has me asking questions in my mind that will hopefully be answered in the upcoming installments of the book.  Complemented by the art of Toni Fejzula, this is a dark yet visually unique book.

Who is Veil? We will have to wait and see. Next book is due out in April 2014. Until then….
