Lara Croft. Video game vixen and the girl that caused a generation of young boys to hit puberty. With the latest video game release she was reinvented for a new generation. She’s a younger, inexperienced and less buxom Lara. That may sound like a guy thing to say, but the original Lara was definitely carrying a heavy load and they have thankfully made her a more realistic character, physically and otherwise.
Dark Horse’s new series, written by the always awesome Gail Simone and drawn by Nicolás Daniel Selma, takes place in this new universe and starts off after the events shown in the game. Lara is carrying a lot of guilt because she blames herself for what happened at the island where they were shipwrecked. She and the other survivors of the Endurance are having dreams about what happened. This first issue has to deal with bridging the gap between the game and comic, but we get enough mystery and action to hold your attention and make you want more. The book has a nice look to it thanks to Selma’s art and he handles some great action scenes with ease. If you are a fan of the game and were bummed when it ended, like me, then you can continue Lara’s adventures here.
All of the Tomb Raider games have been heavy into mystery and problem solving. I can see early on that Simone is building a mystery here in the same tradition. She writes strong female characters that are interesting and her wicked sense of humor usually finds a way into her books. Just take the sequence that has Lara silently dealing with a guy that has a few issues with boundaries. It is funny without Lara having to say a word.
