REVIEW: Six-Gun Gorilla: Long Days of Vengeance

Let’s get it out of the way right away.  Yes, there are two books called Six-Gun Gorilla.  One is by Boom! Studios and this one, which is an independent book by Brian Christgau.  Other than the name and a basic concept, they couldn’t be more different.

Now, with that out of the way, what did I think of Six-Gun Gorilla: Long Days of Vengeance?  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  The cover of the book by Wes Huffor is fabulous, poster worthy even, it definitely gets things started right.

The interior art by Adrian Sibar is really top notch on some panels and seems kind of shaky on others.  In fact, I think the animals are drawn better than the humans.  However, considering who the main character is, that may not be a bad thing.  There is certainly no shortage of apes for him to draw in this issue, and I’m loving every bit of it.  There is a two page sequence that is a thing of beauty.  SGG is firing shot after shot, with his hand over the hammer of his pistol…..it’s wonderful.

Christgau handles the story duties and does so with gusto.  He quickly sets the tone of how bad ass this book will be by introducing us to SGG already involved in a gunfight, but quickly moving into his backstory so we see how he becomes the gun toting simian of awesomeness that we already love.  The dialog is fun and we become invested in the characters in a short amount of time.  It ends in a little bit of an odd place, but that is about the only negative I can come up with.

You can pick up this book for the bargain price of $1.99 through www.sixgungorilla.com and I can’t recommend it enough.  This book deserves much more praise than I think it is getting.  Issue #2 is already in the works so drop what your doing and go pick it up and help support an indie book that deserves to play with the big boys.
