Review: ROGUE TROOPER #1

Posted on the 04 March 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

They call him 7375-1, a Rogue Trooper. Last of his squad. Something happened and he’s going to find out.

On a planet called Nu-Earth, the Norts and Southers are at war on a so called dead planet ruined by chemicals and nuclear waste. A team of biologically altered infantrymen were ambushed but we don’t know how or why. One soldier remains and is looking for answers. This Rogue Trooper carries with him 3 biochips with the consciousnesses of his former G.I.’s (Genetic Infantryman) in his equipment. He and his helmet, pack and gun that are equipped with the chips set off to begin his mission for whatever it is he’s looking for.

For those that are unaware (like I was), this is a reboot of a series that started in the early 1980′s from 2000 AD. The character of Rogue Trooper was created by writer Gerry Finley-Day and artist Dave Gibbons. This story is starting in the same fashion as how the original story did. Where they go with it from here, I don’t know. He seems like an interesting character. The look of the book from a visual standpoint is nice. There is a bit of violence as to be expected in a war situation. They handled the gory parts well. There is nothing like seeing flying body parts after an explosion.

I am curious to see how IDW handles the title. An added bonus is the interview with the writer at the end of the book. It lends a lot of nice insight on his thoughts of the character and storyline as well as what he plans to do with it. Now we just wait for book 2.
