I don’t know about you guys but I have random moments of memory surge when I run across something that I can remember through out my childhood that had a some kind of impact on where I am at today. So while shopping the other day I came across the magazine rack and was just glancing over and something caught my eye. A Lego edition of Mad Magazine (in honor of The Lego Movie). I will be the first to admit I have not picked up nor looked at a Mad Magazine since I was maybe a pre-teen. It was one of those magazines that my mom got my dad every month, and I remember him reading and collecting them for the longest time. Neither my mom or dad is still with us anymore so when I run across stuff like that I try to pick it up. And the bonus being it was the Lego edition so how could I truly resist. But truthfully they fell short on this, due to the fact that they may be 5 pages of Lego related material thru the whole magazine.
So being excited about it when I got home I automatically sat down in my chair and opened it up. Lets be honest a lot of things have changed since my childhood and Mad Magazine apparently has went on with the change. Now I cant tell you how long any of this has been going on because I haven’t read one of these magazines in years but we will go through this. Now I always remember Mad having an amazing cover and it still does this thing is awesome, and honestly will be one of the true reason’s why I plan to hold on to this edition. Now the first big thing that I noticed that I disliked and I am not sure how long they have been doing this but it totally threw me off. But I remember when I read this magazine when I was younger the pages was not glossy, nor was it all done in color. Now I have nothing wrong with the color stuff it can be very eye catching, but to me I prefer the old school non glossy pages and the black and white comic strips to me that was one of the things that made the magazine. You all might disagree but that’s just me. Also the total length of this magazine may be 55 pages. Which to me is lighter than what I remember.
Being Mad Magazine it is known for its spoofs and I will admit I still love these about this magazine. The spoof of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was and is quiet funny and the art work is still amazing. Sergio Aragones presents A mad look at Gravity is also great, and the spoof of the American Girl Dolls based on HBO’s Girls literally made me cry from laughing it was so twisted lol Spy VS. Spy is and always will be one of my favorite comic strips ever, but it being in color totally throws it off for me.
While the art work is still amazing in this Magazine, and the spoofs are still great, and the memories still present. I would say those slight up to date changes for the magazine has caused me to push it a way. And I know some of you all totally disagreeing with me right now, “change is good”, to me this time change totally discredited this magazine for me, and I know this may be harsh, but unless a cover catches my eye again, this will be the last Mad Magazine I buy. I bought it and looked thru it once, partially, lost interest and its been laying here since.
