I just spent an incredible amount of time recapping the entire 9 seasons of Buffy. I was primed and ready to go for season 10. The first issue, New Rules, catches us up to the events of season 9. Magic has been restored, but it is different. Willow is struggling to figure out the differences in her abilities. Buffy is back to slaying vampires and we see an uneasy alliance between Buffy and Vicky the vampire as they try to defeat a common foe, the zompires. Vicky was shown at the end of season 9 and it was hinted at that she was different. This issue shows that she is not alone and Buffy and the gang are in for quite a fight. The Scooby Gang is seen as whole as they have been in years in this issue. We see a character that has been missing for quite some time, old friends and a huge surprise at the end.
The writing has been really good on the Dark Horse Buffy books and Christos Gage is no slouch. I expect great writing, banter and surprises in a Buffy comic and this one delivers. What really impressed me was the art by Rebekah Isaacs. She really captures Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of her art as we go along.
Based on what we see in this issue, season 10 is going to be a fun ride as the stakes (pun intended) have never been higher.
