Restoring Volume to Hair and Skin: The True Vitamin D

By A Beauty Feature @abeautyfeature

The great paradox of aging is that as we gain wisdom and become more at ease with our bodies and the fact we got curls instead of dead straight hair, we can lose density where we need it most. Unfortunately, not around the hips but rather, the hair, eyebrows and skin are thinner and less lustrous than we once took for granted.
I’m in my early 30s, so I’m hardly knocking on the door of the nursing home, but I have noticed that my skin, hair, brows and nails can use a boost – as both a cure and a preventative measure! The real Vitamin D from the age of 30 onwards is Density.

I’ve been using Kerastase  hair products since my mother started leaving them in the shower when I was 13. She soon realised her mistake and left us something less glamorous, but the relationship was formed. Nothing else leaves my naturally dry, curly hair feeling soft and smelling divine in quite the same way. Fortunately, Kerastase have developed a range of hair treatments that target thinning hair. The key ingredient is Stemoxydine. This mimics the ideal environment for stem cells to stimulate lazy hair follicles. The Densifique products also contain hyaluronic acid (HA), gluco-peptide and ceramides – ultimately hydrating, strengthening and softening hair fibres. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a gel-like water holding molecule that is the space filler and cushioning agent in all humans and animals. HA cushions joints, nerves, hydrates skin and hair, and fills the eye. HA helps to retain over a 1000 times its weight in water within the cells of skin, making it an excellent moisturizer. In fact, no other biological substance can retain as much water.

To enhance hair and skin health, I recommend supplementing a healthy and fresh diet with Hair Nutrition for Women capsules by Hairdresser’s Formula. The capsules contain ingredients that also strengthen and improve the appearance of brittle nails and sallow skin.

It isn’t for everyone, of course, but I also get anti wrinkle injections to the forehead. I frown when I’m concentrating, which is most of the time, and this has resulted in horizontal lines that give me the appearance of being stressed and tired. Contrary to what you may have thought, the injections are actually really quick and the anticipation is much worse than the tiny sting. While this doesn’t increase density, it does prevent lines and wrinkles from forming as the result of routine facial expressions. There is NO FROZEN look! I can still raise and lower my brows – I just don’t have any deep lines appearing now. I go to the Victorian Cosmetic Institute in Melbourne, and I recommend you do your research and see the past results of a practitioner before you make a booking.  Zero-invasiveness ways to increase density and improve your youthful appearance include great skincare and a few makeup tricks.

MiracleWorker Moisturizer

Philosophy’s Miracle Worker is a cult antiaging serum in the cabinet of many a beauty editor. The combination of resveratrol, glutathione and powerful antioxidants protect against environmental damage and the superficial signs of premature aging.

Often neglected are the eyebrows. By filling them in subtly, and grooming them into a shape that flatters your facial shape, you can easily appear 5 years younger. I swear by ELES Brow Blender pencil with in-built brush. Leave it in your handbag for touch-ups. I also tint my eyebrows a darker shade to match my hair. Do it at home with 1000 Hours Dark Brown Eyelash & Brow Tint.

A nude lipliner and gloss are your secrets to fuller-looking lips. Do not be heavy handed! Apply a nude liner around the edges of the lip line and dab the gloss on the center of your upper and lower lips. This gives the impression of fuller, more defined lips. Don’t be tempted to use a dark line – you want this to appear natural.
It must also be said that the essential ingredients to skin, hair and nail health and luminosity lie in a healthy and moderate approach to food, exercise and lifestyle. Ensuring that you eat a nutritious diet rich in vegetables, fruit and healthy fats (avocado, fish, nuts and olive oil) and maintain your bone and muscle density through weight-bearing exercise will work wonders for your inner and outer beauty. Don’t forget to stay hydrated with water and green tea daily – a rough guide is 2.5 litres for most people.
