Red Spot 15 Years Old Pot Still Irish Whiskey Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug
In the "spot" line up, the Red Spot 15 Years Old Pot Still Irish Whiskey is the latest and brings us one step closer to reviving the legendary old line; the only one missing is the blue. Aged for 15 years in a combo of ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry (Oloroso) and ex-Marsala casks, this whiskey is one I was incredibly excited for when it was announced. It sounded like there was no way it could be anything but good. My mind created ideas of flavor wizardry in an enticing complex spirit. How could it not be? I'm sure by now you're wondering, so let's stop puttering around this opening section and jump right into the Irish Whiskey review below!

Red Spot 15 Years Old Pot Still Irish Whiskey Review: Details and Tasting Notes

Crafted from an old recipe handed down by the Mitchell & Son family of wine merchants, with records dating back to the early 1900s, the reimagined Red Spot is a triple-distilled, single pot still Irish whiskey that has been matured for a minimum of 15 years in a combination of casks pre-seasoned with bourbon, Oloroso sherry and Marsala fortified wine.

This highly-anticipated release delivers a full-bodied, complex and characterful flavour, worthy of its colourful past.

Red Spot 15 Years Old Pot Still Irish Whiskey Review: Overall and Score

The aroma is good, but it's light and not a whole lot is coming through; what's there is pleasant, but there's a distinct lack of depth. The palate is a bit heavier and a bit deeper, but it's still not all that interesting; good, but just not captivating. The finish is the most interesting part with the heavy copper aspect.

Red Spot 15 Years Old Pot Still Irish Whiskey is a good whiskey, but it's missing the depth of some of the other Spots and the longer it sits the more average it gets. TBH, I'd rather have the regular old Green Spot over it, especially at the price diff. This is a tasty whiskey, but if I'm looking to spend in this range for a 15-year-old Single Pot Still I'd grab the Redbreast 15 instead.

SCORE: 85/100 (B)
