For those of you just tuning in, some general disclosures:
- I work for Lachini Vineyards, a 45-acre bio-dynamically farmed estate vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
- The winery produces ~5000 cases annually, primarily ‘Pinots Worth Coveting.’ They got me at ‘Coveting.’
- I represent the Woodinville WA Tasting Room. We also have one in Carlton, OR.
The personal disclosures:
- I changed careers from a soul-sucking one to wine late in life.
- People laughed at me for doing this. They still do.
- I love what I do. Priceless.
Today I’m writing about how I love writing about wine makers and wine making communities – but fear I’ve lost my objectivity.
I fall in love with wine makers’ stories about how they got started in the business every time - each one a hero’s journey. A journey worth sharing. But maybe I’ve just gotten to emotionally involved to see the ‘hook’ behind the those stories.
So instead of writing about the art of wine at random wineries, I’ll be writing random thoughts about the industry of wine from one winery. And one wine in particular: Pinot Noir.
Pinot Noir – considered by some the most expressive of all varietals. Considered by many the ‘noblest’ of grapes from the noblest of regions: Burgundy. Burgundy – where I travel in October for the French Wine Society Master-Level Program.
My love of Burgundy started me on this path. The artistry of wine keeps me here. Now it’s time to delve into the industry. But never forget its soul.
Expect some turbulence, but enjoy the ride… and feel free to share your thoughts along the way. Santé!
