Anshu sitting on the couch watching cartoons
The past couple of weeks, our home has been the refuge of the eldest daughter of our neighbor who is a manual laborer. His wife and two younger kids have gone to their home state of Bihar in order for his wife to recuperate from a rather serious bout of depression. His eldest daughter, however, had to stay as she goes to the village primary school -- she is 7 years old.Being a laborer means he has to leave home before 8 a.m. and come back after 5 p.m. School is out at 2 p.m. so that means the girl, Anshu, is home alone until her father comes home from work. There are Sundays when the girl is alone the whole day as her father has to work. Although the place where they are living in is rather large, a kid of 7 gets bored rather quickly.
So every 3 p.m., after she comes home from school and changes her uniform for casual togs, Anshu comes over to watch cartoons. She stays until her father comes home.
