Jumping from one craft distillery to another, the next rye whiskey review is the Rabbithole Boxergrail Rye Whiskey. Made from the famous 95/5 mash bill through a contract distiller located in Kentucky, this 3-year-old rye is a KY take on what’s become an IN staple. So-to-speak.
And I get it. Why futz around with a mash bill when you know what works and what you want to highlight. If you want to highlight rye, go big on the rye; if you want to highlight corn go big on the corn; if you want to highlight malt go big on malt and so on and so on. My point? This will be interesting to taste next to what’s left of my James E Pepper Rye.

Rabbithole Boxergrail Rye Whiskey Review: Overall and Score
Aroma is spicy and sweet with light savory and metallic components coming through; Palate is similar but with more of a rustic profile coming to play; Finish melds the characters well and shows the most amount of oak. A tasty release that offers more than you might think.
Given the 95/5 mash they’re running with it’s a bit strange how sweet this Rabbithole Boxergrail Rye Whiskey is with candy, dessert, fruit and cereal grain sweet notes coming and going at irregular intervals that create a craving for the spicy moments. On the whole I’m happy with what’s going on in my glass and I’m excited to see what it will do in some cocktails.
SCORE: 3/5

The sweetness on this outpaces the spic but only by a slim margin which is interesting. With most ryes the story is all about their spice, but here layers of candy, fruit and dessert sweetness breakup the dilly spice notes in a way that keeps the senses interested.
