Protect Your Skin

Protect Your Skin
The slip slop slap message is one that I like to drill to family and friends whenever a planned activity involves sun exposure. Today being the first day of summer, I thought it would be timely to de-bunk some of the myths around sunscreen and being sun smart.
SPF 15 (from say a BB cream) plus SPF 30 = SPF 45Not true. Using two different factors unfortunately don't mean they add up. This one I actually learnt from a makeup counter lady. Probably because I was asking about something vain, like if SPF in foundation might give me ghost face in flash photography.
That Vitamin D thingThe best time of year to expose the body to sun for Vitamin D production is actually smack bang in the middle of winter. May to August to be exact, according to the Cancer Society's fact sheet which you can read here. For September and April, it's best to get outdoor exercise early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Skin covered by clothing means automatic protectionI believed this one for the longest time. The key message from the experts is to make sure your trunk, arms and legs are covered. Darker shades of clothing give better protection and layering makes a difference. Hats are important too!
Now on to a product I can recommend. As someone who gets through a lot of sunscreen, I'm mega thankful for being sent the Skinnies SPF 30 Sungel for review. It's a silky gel formula that dries within two minutes of application. The texture is thick and has a nice silicon-y feel to it. As it is formulated without water, a little goes a really long way. I can see this 100ml tube lasting me a long time. This works beautifully underneath makeup too and my top tips are to use the right amount and allowing time for it to dry. Skinnies retails for $34.95 for 100ml or $18.40 for 35ml. Available throughout Australia and New Zealand, click here to find a stockist near you or buy online here.
