Pregnancy is a time when a woman’s body undergoes multiple changes, both internally and externally. The pregnant woman’s diet and lifestyle decides the health of the child. Thus women need to take extra care of their health during pregnancy and should lead a disciplined and healthy lifestyle.

All pregnancies, be it, single or multiple should be taken care well. If it is a twin pregnancy, that is a woman is carrying twins, then she will have to take extra care and precautions to ensure that the twins born are healthy and fine.

Holding a new-born child in arms is a memorable and rewarding experience of any parent, and when there are two kids, the experience is richer. Hence it is advisable that the mother takes utmost care and precautions during twin pregnancy.

Following are some precautions that women with twin pregnancies should take:

  • The first trimester is a crucial period during pregnancy. Hence during this time, extra care needs to be taken. The first and foremost is the diet. Nutrition is of utmost importance. It is important to consume a complete diet that has enough carbohydrates, proteins and fats. She should ensure that her daily intake of calories is at least 300 and that there is extra serving of protein and calcium, two vital nutrients. There should be a good intake of vegetables and fruits. Avoid unhealthy and junk food. Eat regularly and do not skip meals. Take prenatal vitamins as per the doctor’s advice. Iron tablets and folic acid tablets are also necessary.
  • It is important to have food with high fiber content. Instead of snacking on friend and unhealthy food, have nuts, dry fruits, yoghurt, peanut butter and granola bars.
  • Drink plenty of water. It is important for pregnant woman to stay hydrated.
  • Carry on with moderate exercises but only as per doctor’s advice and suggestions.
  • A woman with twin pregnancy can be at a higher risk for anemia. Hence, along with doctor’s medicines, it is also necessary to have salads, leafy vegetables and other food rich in iron.
  • During second and third trimesters, it is necessary to be in touch with doctor for any kind of discomfort. The mother would have to take more rest and put any work commitments on hold. Doctors might also advise against any exercises. Bed rest too may be advised depending on the condition of the mother at the time. There might be requirements for partial bed rest or full bed rest.
  • Body works harder during twin pregnancy. Hence it also needs double the rest. Hence give complete rest to body and mind at regular intervals. While the amount of rest and the period of rest to be taken by a woman with twin pregnancy vary from person to person, follow what the doctors say as explained earlier
  • Follow each and every prescription of doctor strictly. Never miss appointments and do not try even home remedies or tips without doctor’s approval
  • Lastly, enjoy the pregnancy and relish each day and each changes that body and mind undergoes. Motherhood is an experience to be cherished so be cheerful and happy and not just the body but let also the mind feel the cheer.
