Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

What happens when you take matured Single Malt Scotch and mix it with 1-year-old single malt whisky from Virginia and then finish them in a port cask? You get the Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky, that’s what. And it’s better than it sounds… trust me.

Virgina-Highland Port Finished Whisky

The Virginia Distillery is one of a handful of distilleries in America that specializes in an American Single Malt, and I couldn’t be happier to see them doing it. Currently, the main players in that field are Stranahan’s, Westland, Balcones and FEW with Stranahan’s and Westland definitely leading the pack as it’s their main focus. I know there are others out there and more coming on all the time and I think that’s awesome. The more the merrier, so long as they put out great stuff 🙂

Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky Review: OVERALL

Virgina-Highland Port Finished Whisky Review

Virginia-Highland Port Finished Whisky is elegant, punchy and something I wasn’t expecting in the least. Port exudes from this whisky starting with the purplish eye descending to the sweetly balanced aroma, tumbling into the heavy palate and sliding out through the sticky finish.

It contains the darkness and depth of an older malt and the punchy spry nature of a younger malt; the port is the glue that holds it together and balances it out. It’s tasty, I’m enjoying it and I don’t have anything else to say about it except try it… Cheers.

SCORE: 86/100 (B)
