When we were standing in line for theater tickets in NYC recently, we chatted with a woman standing next to us who is an actor living in NYC but is moving to the Twin Cities. Why? So she can get more work! Next Saturday, May 12, the Center will celebrate its 40th Anniversary with 'no work. All Play', a spectacular benefit at Dinkytown's Varsity Theater. They will even have an auction to have the Twin Cities' most talented playwrights, directors and actors turn your idea into a play and perform it—live, on stage, all in one night!
The Center lives its day-to-day life in a converted church in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis, just down the street from Historic Milwaukee Avenue... in the neighborhood that CityPages named Best Hipster Neighborhood 2012.
BuzzFeed, which named Minnesota "Most Hipster State in the US" last year contends that while popular media portrays Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood as the hotbed of hipsterism, the typical Williamsburg hipster is essentially trying to portray the appearance of a Minnesotan! Based on the criteria they considered it wasn't Uptown that came out the most hipster neighborhood... it was Seward.
Close to the Mississippi River, the University of Minnesota and Augsburg College as well as downtown Minneapolis, Seward is a very diverse and progressive neigbhorhood with everything from a food co-op and eateries to hardware and bookstores... even a handmade guitar store.
