Pimp My Ride – It’s Time for a Makeover

Concept 2 Model B

My erg has seen better days

I have a lot in common with my rowing machine – a slightly rusty Concept 2 Model B. Its heyday, much like mine, was the late 80s. Its once smooth exterior is now a bit rough in places. Its action occasionally gets stiff, especially when it’s damp outside, and it could probably benefit from a few new moving parts.

What was I thinking? Seriously, what?

What was I thinking? Seriously, what?

Happily for both of us, there the similarities end. Happily for my ergo, it has never sported a mullet… if only I could say the same for me. And happily for me, my seat – unlike that of my erg – has never been nibbled by mice. I’d say that was one-all, wouldn’t you?

There is one good thing about the passage of time, though. I have learned, through long experience, that no matter how much time you devote to the tedious business of staying healthy, nothing makes you feel as good as an old-fashioned makeover. A fresh haircut (preferably not a mullet), a few new glad rags, maybe a cheeky pair of shoes and I’m as perky as a puppy with a new chew toy.

I see no reason why the same shouldn’t go for my ergometer. In addition to a proper overhaul – new shock cord, new chain, new… whatever those important inner parts are called – I’m thinking that it could also benefit from a more superficial makeover.

In short, I want to pimp my ride. Not for me the muted greys and blacks of the traditional machine. I want something fun, fresh and fabulous.

The excellent people at Concept2 suggested decals, but since it needs a paint job anyway, I’m thinking of getting handy with a paintbrush. So I’m looking for ideas. Do I go for my favorite color and paint it boldly in monochrome? Or do I match it with my number one all-in-one and go for some glam (if stylistically dodgy) animal print? Should I emulate a design like the one sent to me by Concept2 from one of their competitions? Or go more freestyle and see where the spirit moves me?

Tell me what you think. I’m standing by with the Hammerite catalog.
