Perisher Ski Resort in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia is the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere. Four villages combine to make the resort area including Perisher Valley, Guthega, Blue Cow and Smiggin Holes, and it is surrounded by Kosciuszko National Park.
The skiing season is from the middle of June to the first weekend in October, but the main time is July and August. There are 47 lifts operating throughout the skiing areas during the winter. The resort can be reached by the Skitube Alpine Railway.
Perisher Ski Resort offers excellent skiing with 22 per cent of the pistes for beginners, 60 per cent for intermediate skiers and 18 per cent for advanced skiers. Perisher also offers Nordic cross country skiing through the Snowy Mountains. It has over 100 kilometres of cross-country trails that are well marked for show-shoeing, telemarking or cross-country skiing.
There is something for everyone in Perisher. Tobogganing is like flying over the snow and enjoyed by children as well as adults, but toboggans are not allowed on the ski slopes. This is not a problem, because there is a designated toboggan slope on Pipers Ridge near the Perisher Valley car park. Toboggans can be hired in the Perisher Centre.
There is also a Snow Tube Park. On Mt. Piper, Tube Town has lanes especially groomed for the high-speed rides down the slopes on the great tube. There is a special lift back to the top just for tube riders. This is an affordable way to have fun in the snow in a well organised and safe environment.
There is night skiing and boarding for adults and children from four to 15 years who enjoy skiing under the stars. From the end of June to the first week in September fireworks are in the night sky too.
The resort has seven Slopestyle Mountain Sports stores throughout the area, so visitors can get any equipment, souvenirs and hardware they need at very competitive prices. Perisher Centre also has repairs and services, a pharmacy and fashion and jewelry shops.
There are cafes at the base of several lifts for hot and cold drinks and snacks for skiers to take a short break. There are also excellent restaurants that serve Italian cuisine, local dishes, homemade pastries and much more.
The après ski and nightlife in Perisher is alive and well. They offer live music, romantic candle lit dinners, cosy lounges with fireplaces and hot nightclubs where there is music and dancing until the early hours. In all, there are 15 bars, nightclubs and restaurants with something for every taste.
The Perisher Ski Resort aims to be environmentally friendly and has implemented a range of energy management initiatives. Energy efficient snow making systems, low watt light bulbs throughout, the staged removal of inefficient heaters and energy efficient lifts are a few of the changes they are making.
They are also changing all bathroom fittings to water saving devices and reducing waste to a landfill by recycling. They have recycling bins for staff and guests including for electronic waste, printer cartridges and mobile phones.
