Paul John Edited Single Malt Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Our next Indian Whisky, the Paul John Edited Single Malt, brings a bit of peat to the game. We’re working our way up the chain in peat factor, but since I already reviewed the Paul John Peated, we’ll be stopping this peat train at the Bold. Though that’s not where our Paul John journey will be ending this week.

Paul John Edited Single Malt

In the Paul John Brilliance review I mentioned I hadn’t alwasy been a fan of PJ, and that stems from the first time I had their whisky at a Whisky Live 4 or 5 years ago. Those early releases were a tad rough and underwhelming, but over the years they’ve matured and “smoothed out” to become warm, full-bodied, whiskies worth exploring.

Paul John Edited Single Malt Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In Paul John’s Words:

Edited is for the extraordinary. We poured forth all our mastery into crafting this Single Malt. The hint of peat has been skilfully created from discreetly chosen cask profiles. All to delight the true whisky connoisseur. Hear the sea off Goa tell its own stories, unedited.

Tasting Notes

EYE
Amber

NOSE
Warm grainy malt, honey, graham, cocoa, Grape-nuts, fruit, smoke, candy, butterscotch and tad lemon.

PALATE
Oily, fruity, peaty, roasted grain, with buttery toffee, graham and a tad herbally spice.

FINISH
Med-Long -> Smoke and spice.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Good sense of balance, medium body and an oily velvety feel.

An excellent whisky for cocktails that’s perfectly, and enjoyably, sippable on its own. This is something I could easily, and happily, have any night of the week.

Paul John Edited Single Malt Review: Overall and Score

Starts nice and gets better as it opens. Aroma starts a bit raw but as it opens more orchard notes arrive to pair with the light peat; Palate is a warm smoky fruity sip that’s velvety soft; Finish fades out smoky with a touch of spice.

Overall profile is a nice combo of sweet and rustic with a touch of spice that adds depth and complexity. Paul John Edited Single Malt is a good sipping malt, but it’s even better in cocktails with the light peat lending a touch of smoke to anything it mixes with.

SCORE: 3/5
