Paul John Bold Single Malt Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Day three of Indian single malt reviews finds us, well me, sipping on the Paul John Bold Single Malt. We’ve gone up the chain from unpeated (Paul John Brilliance), medium “hint of peat” peated (Paul John Edited) and now we’re sitting fully in the peat seat with the Bold.

When looking at the three core, cut, whiskies this is my favorite in the PJ line for sipping at home on any random night… or every night if you’re in quarantine. The Brilliance is my favorite for sharing with friends on a game day and the Edited is my favorite for making cocktails with. Three tasty whiskies that fit three different moods.

Paul John Bold Single Malt Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In Paul John’s Words:

“Bold is a journey that leads you down the unexplored, unchartered terrains of Goa. It offers you a slice of its best-kept secrets, unravelling the mysteries, bit by little bit. This expression of ours invites you to leave the trail, tread the path less taken and plunge headlong into the delicious depths of Goa.”

Smoke, burnt plastic, roasted nuts, grilled fruit, S’mores and a bit of paprika.

PALATE
Smoke, burnt plastic, roasted nuts, grilled fruit, S’mores and a bit of paprika and ashy char.

FINISH

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Good sense of balance, full body and a heavy oily feel.

A brooding whisky with a lighter sweeter side that increases over time but never overtakes the darker aspects of this smoky single malt.

Paul John Bold Single Malt Review: Overall and Score

This is my “daily sipper nominee of the Paul John core lineup. Aroma reminds me of Laphroaig but lighter and sweeter with more grilled orchard fruit; Palate tips towards chestnut with the roasted notes with bits of copper arriving as it opens; Finish hits all the right notes as it slowly fades out.

This could go toe-to-toe with relatively aged Islay with the boldness it carries (perfectly named). As it opens the Paul John Bold Single Malt gets sweeter while dropping in more maltiness simultaneously. It’s a fun rich whisky that slowly pulls in some lighter notes but stays dark and deep till the end.

SCORE: 3.5/5
