The Passion 4 Fashion vintage show took place on the 22nd of September in the Leeds city town hall. This non-profit event was hosted by the Leeds Federation Housing Association and partners. However this was no ordinary fashion show. Unlike most fashion shows, this 50’s inspired event lacked both amateur models strutting their stuff as well as the up and coming designers longing to show case their collections. So what was this show really all about?
The event gave over 100 unemployed tenants the opportunity to learn a new skill, customising and up-cycling old clothes. On a budget of just £20 and under the guidance and supervision of the Fashion 4 Passions 3 eco designers, the tenants were given the challenge of creating a catwalk outfit, fit for the show! Although we all love fashion and all had a fashionably enjoyable evening, there was more behind the project than merely putting on a show. Passion 4 Fashion engages individuals that feel as though they have hit a barrier through unemployment. The support provided allows these individuals to improve their confidence and self-esteem, whilst engaging in a project that allows them to get creative, have some fun and make friends; Highlighting what can be achieved when organisations work together to provide people with opportunities.
The evening commenced at 6.00pm with a VIP networking event, hosted by the Marvellous Tea Dance. The 50’s tea ladies served light snacks while industry guests mingled and sipped Pimms no1 from tea cups! Whilst the tea party was still in full swing, doors were opened to the public who were able to enjoy a pre-show cocktail in the bar, whilst the recent winner of Peace Mix Uk, Ricky flemming entertained. Guests were slowly ushered into the main hall where the show started on time at 7.00pm. Presented yet again by Capital Radio’s breakfast host JoJo, the brilliant 50’s style opening act Carmen Ghia and the Hot Rods took center stage. Having just released their third album, this foxy dame and the band are definitely the real deal!
The fashion show then commenced! The unusual and creative attires were modeled by no other that the creators themselves, who surprisingly took the catwalk by storm for individuals with no experience! The ambiance in the hall was amazing as the models engaged with the audience, whilst they clapped and cheered them on.
In between the model sets, the audience were able to enjoy speak to the streets break dancer’s exceptional performance. This Leeds based organisation provides a number of positive activities and projects, dedicated in preventing young people from entering into gang life. While the breakers busted moves to the retro grooves, Bianca Gerald, singer and songwriter, silenced the audience with her beautiful voice, leaving us all in awe.
The fashion show ended at around 9.30pm however the fun did not stop there, as guests headed to the VIP after party at the underground O2 Academy. With its second year successfully over it is safe to say that the future for Passion 4 Fashion is definitely looking bright.
Until Next year then!
