Did you know that party ambiance can affect your guests appetites? Well, it's true. Party food and feelings, combined, are real. The mood that you create for your party can help your guests enjoy the food you serve, causing them to enjoy it more and to eat less, according to Psychological Reports.
What they found was: a Hardee's fast food restaurant was transformed; afterward, researchers found with milder lighting and music, customers ate 18% fewer calories than customers in unmodified Hardee's restaurants.
Professor of marketing and consumer behavior at Cornell University in New York, Brian Wansink, Ph.D, the author of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, asks this question, "If softer music and softer lighting seem to get people to eat less in a fast food situation, why not try the same thing at home?" I wonder the same thing Wansink does.
As a matter of fact, by personal experience, now that I think about it, I know that this is true. Personally, I'm a stickler about dimmed lighting anyway, because of the chronic uveitis I've often been plagued with due to being diagnosed with AS; Ankyloysing Spondylitis. When I host my own parties, especially evening gatherings, my party lighting is primarily candles. I think things look better candle lit (including people). So, I always dial down the lights. And of course for dinner parties, whether the food is served buffet style or plated, music with a slower groove just seems to be a more natural fit.So, for those of you hosting gatherings specifically for weight-loss groups or planning a bridal shower or a bachelorette party for a group of women who are possibly super weight conscious , consider the ambiance that you can create at your home (where you have complete control of the environment).
Truly, this is something worthwhile to think about. From my experience, I believe there's something to this. Bright lights and faster dance music seems to have people at parties all hopped up, bopping around, working up a bigger appetite and eating a lot more food.
But, you know what they say, don't you? Experiment with this for yourself and see what happens. But I must say again, from all the years I've spent around all kinds of groups of people at various types of functions in the party and catering industries, I think Wansink and Psychological Reports are on the money and that party food and feelings are real.
