Monographie brings together all elements that make an iconic French brand: fitted basics and timeless silhouettes crafted in solid colors and premium fabrics meant for women who love to dress feminine without appearing blatantly sexy. We caught up with founder Aude Casteja to discuss her shift to fashion design, her newly founded company, and how the Parisian fashion heritage inspires her collections.

What made you decide to switch careers?
I realize now that deep in my mind I always had the idea of launching my own brand. I first decided to explore fashion from different angles – creative and business – in order to be prepared for such a challenge as launching your own fashion label can be.
How is the French fashion heritage reflected in your collections?
I would say “Parisian heritage” rather than French. The Monographie woman is very Parisian. It is truly part of the brand’s DNA.

Who is your muse?
La Parisienne.
What are your top design priorities?
Structure and wearability.

What are the main materials you use and which is your favorite fabric to work with?
I love working with fabrics that allow for structure and radical lines. They have to be quite thick and dry. I generally love working with wool. Quality is a key element, of course, therefore all the fabrics that I use are natural, luxurious Italian fabrics.

You seem to stick mainly to solid colors. What is your approach towards color?
I always work with solid colors and stick to two or three color tones. The minimalistic approach of my collections is not only key in the structures and cuts but also in the use of colors.
Tell us a few words about your A/W ’15 collection.
It is all about sharp tailoring meets fluid, delicate lines, and feminine vs masculine silhouettes. It is all about contrasts.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced so far?
Launching my own fashion label!

Which do you think is the secret of the flawless French-girl style?
I cannot clearly explain it… It is a matter of attitude and glibness.
What are your future plans?
I would love to show my collection on the runway. To be continued…!
