OK…I’m kind of obsessed, again, ok well maybe not obsessed but maybe just in love with Faux Bois… As fall nestles in with that crisp chill in the air, crunching of leaves beneath my feet and colors bleeding out of our trees it’s no wonder my mind wanders to nature… as it (and me) slowly start to hibernate, I start to crave my wool sweaters and crackling fires, so much so that even the slightest hint of wood grain sends me to sigh and softly whisper “Faux Bois”!
Literally translated to mean “Fake Wood” it’s not just the kitschy artifice that has stolen my heart but the way it’s being interpreted and produced has certainly elevated it from Kitsch to Artful or Ironic. What can I say, I’m a child of the 80′s when mixing materiality and pattern was considered avant guard. Of course the French have been doing it for hundreds of years but us Americans have given it our own twist. We have taken the art of making wood out of concrete and brought it to fabric, plastic and paper…
While this trend has been resurfacing every few years, it does seem as though it’s here to stay. Many designers have put their Faux Bois Products on permanent rotation it seems. I am going to do my thanksgiving table as an ode to Faux Bois, so stay tuned for Photos… but until then enjoy some Faux Bois items I’ve curated here and in my Etsy treasury.
