Pak Army Dismissed New York Times Report on Drone Attacks

Posted on the 05 March 2013 by Azharnadeem

ISPRThe Pakistan Army on Tuesday dismissed a report published in the New York Times claiming that it carried out drone strikes in country’s Northern areas and killed two Al-Qaeda leaders.

The report claimed that US was not involved in the drone strikes on February 6 and 8 in North Waziristan, in which the report said Al-Qaeda leaders Sheikh Abu Majid Al Iraqi and Sheikh Abu Waqas and four other Uzbek terrorists were killed, suggesting the attacks might be conducted by Pakistan Army itself and to counter the public reaction, it blamed CIA for the attacks.

The report suggested that these strikes were part of Pakistan army’s operation against terrorists in Orakzai Agency. It also claimed that US has not conducted a drone strike in Pakistan since January this year.

Pakistan Army spokesperson in a statement rubbished the report, saying such an accusation “is distortion of the facts and seems to be aimed at diluting Pakistan’s stance on drone strikes.”

He also denied that Pakistan army carried out any operation in the area on dates mentioned in the report.
