Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes.

I couldn’t agree more with the chorus of today’s song. Owner of a lonely heart, much better than-a owner of a broken heart. It’s true, loneliness is a lot easier to deal with than heartache. Heartache is miserable and it takes forever to rid from your mind. It’s permanent to your heart while loneliness can change.

Owner of a Lonely Heart was released as a single in November of 1983 from the album, 90125. It went to #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and is the band’s highest charting single to date. The lyrics were written by guitarist Trevor Rabin, who had recorded an early demo of the song before joining the band.

The lyrics are somewhat contradictory to me. The chorus suggests that it’s safer to be lonely rather than hurt. However, the verses explore taking a chance, being yourself, and not hesitating in love. Well, what if you get hurt? Maybe it’s an inner battle between playing it safe vs. getting close to someone. What do you think?
