Oonjal – Wooden Swings in South Indian Homes

By Vsudarsan

South India is known for its wood work made out of rose and teak wood. You will find several products made with wood here. One of them is my favorite indoor swing, which is also known as oonjal. It is a design element that immediately adds comfort to any room. I can tell you from my experience - all it takes is a few moments on an oonjal to completely relax. Just kicking the feet to start one and going back and forth right inside the home is a thrilling moment. It is perfect for all ages, and in traditional homes, the head of the family starts his or her day on this wooden swing with a cup of coffee and the local newspaper. Later, the rest get to enjoy the swing.

The metal chain is also quite special in any oonjal. Typically the chain is made with intricate details along with all the loops that hold the wooden plank. The whole wooden swing is quite magical and you might be able to spot this in traditional homes in south India. And, it would look like these rooms below. Hope you are enjoying my Indian decor ideas and what's special in my hometown.. and I love sharing this to you from Chennai
