Of Attitude and Competence

Posted on the 02 September 2013 by Hreric @myhreric

One of the challenges in job hunting is having the PATIENCE of waiting until you succeed. While some are successful and are hired immediately, there are many who are not. After applying for three or more companies, still they are not employed. This is just common among the many job hunters out there as the competition for that scarce job vacancy is so tough.

As one succumbs to the feeling of frustration, boredom takes place and then the loss of hope of finding a job. A number of applicants gave up after three to five unsuccessful job application . As a result, they resulted to self-pity and loss of confidence. Then, comes the worst, loss of motivation.

In this time where the job opportunity is less than the number of unemployed, the competition becomes tough. It is in this light that as an applicant, your success in job search would depend on the branding you will make on yourself. What will set you apart from the rest. What contribution can you bring to the company should they decide to hire you. The conventional answer most applicants would think is that they are hardworking not just enough. Coming from a prestigious school, or graduating with honors is not enough.

One has to go beyond those kind of reasoning as being the best applicant. I had been interviewing many applicants for years and I had a clear picture of an applicant that would fit the job vacancy. And that someone should have the ATTITUDE and COMPETENCE .

Attitude is this inner characteristic of the person, his beliefs towards a particular person, event or things, It is his mental disposition on how he will respond to events surrounding him. Competence are sets of desired behaviors for a particular job vacancy. It is the knowledge, skills and behavior one should have in order perform effectively the function of the job.

The workforce of today is very competitive. Many applicant are almost equally as competitive with each other. Their skills and training are as competitive as the others. What will spell the difference now is the applicants attitude. Whatever the available job vacancy is, the right attitude is what hiring managers are looking for.

Someone who does not easily gives up when he fails, someone who sees the light beyond the dark filled tunnel and someone who sees the rainbow after the rain.
