Valentine's
Day is coming. Both if you are a engaged or single it does not matter. Love can
have many expressions . It can be for the family , a friend, a puppy . Anyway I
would like to give you and epigram about love but dedicated to singles - Odi et amo written by
Catullus.
Odi et amo . Quare id faciam , fortasse
requiris .
Nescio , sed proud sentio et excrucior .
I hate and I love. Maybe you will ask me why I
do it.
I do not know , but this is what happened to me
and I suffer for it .
I could
speak about the generic concept of love
after the epigram, but I rather prefer to do some gossip about the poet.
Why Catullus wrote these verses ? Catullus lived in Roman society
where the marriages were often combined by the families and where the couple
were still very young (this also because
the average age was 40 years old!) .
Catullus fell in love with a woman who was nicknamed Lesbia to protect her
identity. The nickname was useless because all the word now as then knows the
identity of this woman. The real name was Clodia.
Clodia lived
in the Roman jet set and she was an upright person- despite the matrons were faultless
and they had to leave the party when the
dancers came to entertain the guests (for their good rep). Maybe Catullus and
Clodia were not a perfect couple- you can say- anyway what couple is perfect? Well, not. Actually the situation was different for the
poor Catullus.Clodia never fell in love with him . She was a timeserving, looking only for whom gave her some advantages .
Catullus
was definitely not the person she was looking for. He was a poet in a group
called Poetae Novi. They wrote about the lyricism of feelings, but they were not
appreciated by the society . So the poor Catullus suffered for love and wrote this epigram, but , just for gossip
, he never had any live affairs with Clodia.
San Valentino si avvicina. Che siate in coppia o single
non importa. L’amore può avere tante forme: verso la famiglia, un amico, un cucciolo.
In ogni caso voglio lasciarvi un epigramma che parla di amore ma è dedicato ai
single e fu scritto da Catullo.
Odi et amo. Quare id faciam, fortasse requiris.

Odio e amo. Forse ti domanderai perché io lo faccia.
Non so , ma sento che capita e me ne tormento.
Potremmo parlare dell’amore, di concetti generici ma
forse è più interessante fare un po’ di gossip storico.
Perché Catullo scrisse questi versi? Premettiamo che
viveva nella società romana dove spesso le unioni erano combinate dai familiari
e dove gli sposi erano sempre molto giovani ( anche perché l’età media di
allora era di 40 anni!). Catullo si innamorò di una donna che venne
soprannominata Lesbia per proteggere la sua identità ma tutti sappiamo, e lo
sapevano anche allora che il vero nome della fanciulla amata da Catullo era
Clodia.Clodia faceva parte della Roma bene e ,nonostante le
matrone dovessero essere donne irreprensibili e lasciare i banchetti quando
arrivavano le danzatrici ad intrattenere gli ospiti, lei non era quella che si
definirebbe una donna integerrima.Certo non sarebbe stata una coppia perfetta
, direte voi, ma l’amore è l’amore. No, no. Putroppo per il povero Catullo le
cose non stavano così. Clodia non se lo filava minimamente e dava attenzione
solo a chi le servisse, non di certo al poeta Catullo che, appartenendo
al gruppo dei Poetae novi e dedicandosi
al lirismo dei sentimenti, erano ampiamente snobbati dalla società più goliardica
del tempo. Così il povero Catullo si tormentò e scrisse questo epigramma
storico, ma, per la cronoca, non concluse mai con Clodia.
