There are two distinct similarities between this film and Tron Legacy, Konsinski's other Sci Fi outing. Both films have stunning visuals with a nod to classic science fiction design and they also have awesome soundtracks. It's no surprise that the music of Tron has a similar style to the music found in Oblivion since they share a composer between them. So there you go, I thought the music and the effects were awesome but what about the film? Oblivion really is a film of two halves. On the one side it is full of movie cliches especially in the action sequences. And I guessed a couple of the plot twists. On the other hand it has an intelligent feel to it which is realised in the films main revelation. I'm also pleased to say that the story came to a satisfying conclusion.
There are certain things about this film that bug me, little annoyances that prevent it from being a classic - at times the story is confusing instead of being informative. Certain story elements are explained more than once while the more interesting and deeper things take a back seat. I like deep, meaningful stories but when I'm not told everything I should know it becomes annoying. Sometimes it's nice to be spoon-fed certain bits of information. I certainly feel that Oblivion could have reached classic Sci Fi status but it was trying a bit too hard to be clever.
Overall opinion
It's all there from the stunning set pieces to the brain scratching Asimov style story telling. There's plenty in this film to draw you in and there's plenty to keep you watching. Just be prepared for the let down moments and the fact that there can be too much going on at any one moment.
