NWA Straight Outta Compton Movie Review

I’ll admit that I’m not much into rap anymore. The older I got, the more my taste in music changed. I listen to some rap, I love Rae Sremmurd, but most of it gets no airplay in my home. I’m now going back in time, 28 years ago when I acquired an NWA cassette tape from a source I fail to remember at this time. It was before music came with warning labels about explicit language. I remember listening to their music in my room on my walkman with my mouth wide open in shock from what I was hearing. But I liked it, the beats made me move, and the lyrics put me in shock.
I got a chance to see NWA Straight Outta Compton biopic on opening day. I purposely went at a time when most people would be at work. I wanted to focus really on the movie and not be bombarded by the crowd. In my opinion, this is one of the best on screen biopic I’ve seen since Jamie Foxx in Ray. The acting and casting is superb! Eazy E, Ice Cube, & Dr. Dre were all portrayed by excellent actors with Ice Cube oldest son taking on the role of his father. I can tell that care was given when casting the members of the group, as well as, Shug Knight, Tupac, and Snoop Dog.
NWA rapped about the realities of police brutality before we could see it for ourselves. It reminded me of what made me love NWA. Their desire to break the rules, tell it like it, and rap about the world as they saw it; a world that some people will never understand. I recommend this movie and challenge you to see it for yourself but if you:
Don’t like profanity, nudity, harsh lyrics, or rap music this is not the movie for you.
If you are looking for some positive portrayal of women, this is not the movie for you.
A good movie in my opinion evokes emotions; there were times when I laughed, there were times when I pumped my fist in the air, and there were times that made me angry. Lastly, there was a time that made me sad. I had no idea what to expect when I went to the theater. I figured it would be really good or either bad. Overall, Straight Outta Compton is an excellent movie about rap/hip-hop most controversial group.
Definitely worth my $13.00; movies are getting too expensive to see crap!
