Robert Matthews, a physicist at Aston University (Birmingham, England), seems to have solved the problem that’s been bothering everyone and their mother ever since we started using headphones. Namely, Matthew’s has figured out how to keep your headphone cords tangle-free.
According to Daily Mail, Matthews investigated “Murphy’s Law of String” and the physicist now claims that he has come up with a fix that could permanently eliminate tangled headphone cords. After some experimenting (12,000 knotting tests!), Matthews and students at Coundon Court school had the idea to pin the cord together in two spots – the two earbuds need to be held together with a clip, and then attached to the cable near the audio jack with another clip.
Matthews said: “The study explains why your headphone cable mysteriously turns into one big jumbled mess while it’s in your bag or pocket”. He also added that “this was all about using hard science to tackle an everyday issue.”
It might be the first time a scientist has decided to tackle this issue, but many headphones manufacturers tried to offer solutions for the “tangles problem” over the years, though without huge success.
