Vernon Philander claimed five wickets for seven runs
Vernon Philander produced an earth-shattering five-wicket haul as South Africa shot out New Zealand for a miserable 45 runs on the opening day of the first Test at Newlands on Wednesday.
Philander, registering his 8th five-for in Tests, recorded his career-best figures of 6-3-7-5 as elected to bat Blackcaps, playing their first Test under new skipper Brendon McCullum, could last just 19.2 overs.
Follow pacers Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn finished with 3-14 and 2-18 respectively.
The calamity of the New Zealand began in the second over when Philander edged opener Martin Guptill (1) to AB de Villiers behind the stumps. Later the rest of rusty batting line-up came a cropper and toppled like pack of cards.
Barring Kane Williamson (13), no other tourist batsman was able to reach double-digits. But they evaded the humiliation of being bowled out for the lowest ever Test total, 26, scored by themselves in innings defeat against England in Auckland in 1954-55.
Playing his 61st Test, Steyn became the fourth South African to take 300 Test wickets.
