Elections: a formal and organized process, usually free and fair, of electing an eligible political body to lead and rule. In this process, the majority of population chooses a body to represent democracy with legislation, justice and co-operation with its public.
In the present day, our ruling government is the first one in Pakistan’s history to complete its tenure of 5 years. And so, elections are expected to be held after 16th March 2013, within 90-days after discharging of the current rule, as per constitution and till then, a care-taker government will be formed for the meanwhile until the formation of the new government.
According to the now-a-days law and order situation in our state, a confusion has raised whether the elections will or will not be held in Pakistan in the coming year. Well, the elections-2013 should be held; they have to take place as the current government in Pakistan is only owing its existence due to the co-operation and support of all the other political parties, otherwise this government would have been demolished before the day.
As this government is the only lucky one to complete its 5 years of democratic rule, so let us analyze some of its salient traits. Let us throw some light at the economic aspect. The economic growth rate of the country, in comparison to democracy and martial laws, is disappointing. The statistics show that inflation has been increased to about 100% in the last 5 years. 7-10 billion rupees daily corruption is reported by Fasih Bokhari, Chairman N.A.B.
In the last 5 years, terrorism has caused anarchy; hence collapse of law and order and chaos in the country. Terrorism has broken the boundaries of rules, law and order, threatening the safety of our bureaucrats, ministers, our militarians and leaders who are heavily guarded; it raises a point to ponder that what about the security of people like you and I?
A scourge of terrorism: Karachi; where is no respect of law and order. It has been a hostage to three political parties; MQM, PPP and ANP, who claim to be the champions of the area by fighting for the control and killing their opponents. We about daily, listen to the stories of Bhatta, Extortion and Target-killing there. Karachi is the biggest, financial capital and the only working port Pakistan has and if my statistics are not wrong, then one day of strike in Karachi = loss of millions of rupees. Even in Baluchistan, kidnapping for ransom is sponsored by their provincial members and politicians.
The political parties here are the fiefdoms of some certain families like PPP, which claim to be the biggest political party of Pakistan is actually a family party of Bhutto’s. PML-N belongs to the Sharif’s and PML-Q to Chaudhary Brothers. These all political parties are preparing their heirs as successors like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Hamza Shabaz, Moonis Elahi, etc.
Democracy means government of the people, by the people and for the people. But in our country’s democratic rule, the Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has all the powers in his own hand which is not democracy. Democracy is power to the grass-roots level, not only to the tip. Even all these political parties show favoritism and have formed inner cabinets of their own.
Here, I would also like to state the example of Jamshed Dasti, our MNA, who was thrown out of the parliament because of fake degrees, like others accused of it, but he got re-elected by PPP and came back in the government.
In the light of all these political scenarios, many thoughtful questions arise: According to the economic statistics, can we again bear the burden of another democratic rule for 5 more years? Is this really democracy that is practiced in our country? Is the democracy in Pakistan following laws? Does the present democratic system provide us with the solution to our problems? In short, do we have and want such leaders again to rule us for the next five years???
