The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum of the University of Minnesota dedicated its new Sculpture Garden a couple months ago, and I have been looking for an opportunity to visit this walkable garden. With fall color at its peak, this week afforded a wonderful time to visit the more than 20 sculptures generously donated from the personal collection of Alfred and Ingrid Lenz Harrison of Wayzata.
The grass was still green, and some trees were ablaze with color... that perfect time of year when there is a wonderful mix of color. I have always been a fan of Louise Nevelson, and was delighted to find this example of her work in a such a wonderful outdoor setting.
The Sculpture Garden is near the High Point along Three-Mile Drive, which gives a fabulous hilltop view. I love framed picture created by the hole in the Disc Sprial by Jesus Bautista Moroles, it makes me think of David Nash's Standing Frame at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
You can reach the garden by car, on foot via the extensive trail system, or on a tour trolley. If you travel by car, the parking lot is just past the garden... parking is not allowed on the road.
Whether or not you enjoy sculpture, the Arboretum is a wonderful destination to enjoy fall color... only a few weeks left!
The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is located off Highway 5, west of Chanhassen. The grounds are open 8:00 am to 5:30 pm or sunset, whichever is sooner. Admission is $12 for ages 13 and over. Call 952-443-1400 for more information.
