New Member of the Team!

By Kc2610 @kc2610
I'm so excited to say that I have a new member of the team! In my last post I mentioned I was looking for a full-time groom that can help me with my horses and the yard and I can help them with their riding aspirations in return. The one I said I had in mind came for a chat on Saturday, and safe to say it was very successful and he moved in and started work the next day!
His name is Will and he is an eventer with big ambition. We were friends at Hartpury a couple of years ago when we were doing A-levels, but like me he left to pursue his riding career. I had the plan that he would help me run my training yard next year when it is all set up and ready to move in to, as I have always wanted to work with an eventer. I find it helps to have a more well-rounded rider on the yard rather than all dressage riders, and it also opens our doors to eventers, broadening our market. So Will and I expected to start working together at the end of next year, but the job he had wasn't working out so he asked what my position was in employing people. Of course I was looking for someone, so it couldn't have been more perfect timing!
Because Will is now full time with me, he has moved into the flat at Ampney and I'm back at home now. I'd only lived there for a week! All that sorting out to try and get moved in, and I finally got settled and then had to move out again. I knew it would happen, just not so soon! Can't complain though, I'm so grateful for Will coming in, I was dreading having to do trials and going through all sorts of people to try and find the right groom.
Everything is very easy going on the yard at the moment as we only have three horses in, but it's actually perfect as it gives Will and I time to get used to working with eachother. I can take the time to teach him on the horses so when I go away I know he can school the horses in my system, the system they are used to. Chad will come back to me in a couple of weeks, and Bertina will come back not long after him, so that's five horses. I know that one horse is coming in six weeks, and we are looking for a horse for Will, so thats seven horses. Then the whole main yard is full. To expand we would have to use the top yard, but that's further down the track.
I'm just really glad I can now go off and teach and not have to worry about rushing back to the yard, or not being able to take clients on because I have to be on the yard. Will is more than capable in looking after the horses so I feel really comfortable being away for the afternoon doing the things I need to do to further my career.
So all is looking bright and positive at the moment, and I am still going for my lessons with Gareth which are always amazing and inspiring. The aims now are to galavant around the country hunting for a horse for Will, start riding Chad and bring him to Ampney, followed by Bertina. I've put ads up for my teaching and training livery so will hopefully start getting more clients, and voila, we have a recipe for a successful business! Still can't really believe I'm doing this at 19. On Monday Will and I headed off in the lorry with Seb up to Gareth's for a lesson, and it actually felt like Rugrats All Grown Up. It's such a big transition going from being the teenager dependent on all the adults, to the young adult that is starting to do it for themself and take on all the responsibilities. In saying that, I find it so incrdibly exciting and can't wait for my career to progress! All I need now, is a lie-in....
