Review: I'm not sure we needed a part 2 to the fancyman storyline, but I'm glad we got to see Jess' new relationship develop as the show touched the usual issues that arise when there's such a big age difference between partners. "1989 was, my friend, the year that I learned to use the toaster by myself." We didn't have a toaster back then, or at least I don't remember one, but I was starting first grade in 1989. What would I talk with a guy like Russell? To be honest, I wouldn't date a guy Russell's age, not even if he looked like Dermot Mulroney, but we're talking about Jess here and it's fun to watch the two worlds clash. I'm actually pretty excited to see her new beau making friends with the gang and trying to fit in with a younger, crazier group, while trying to teach his kid about responsibility at the same time.
I'm curious if this Nick-dating-teens-arc will be continued moving forward, it would be cool to see him have some kind of a sex life, even if it's with college señoritas, but for now the best part was Dirk's presence. Nick's super smart, super gross friend, with his lady scarfs and his inappropriate comments, was the highlight of this week's episode.
The episode touched on the relationship between Winston and Shelby one more time. After they decided they are boyfriend and girlfriend, the writers went to deepen that connection with the inevitable "I love you"s and the question whether space is something they want to have or not. I think it was way too early to go there and that it deprived us of the normal evolution of a realistic relationship, especially since there was no need to rush things, what with the show getting renewed for a second season. But at this point they bring that sweet romantic factor that has been missing in all the other relationships we have seen this year.
And speaking of relationships, one that is developing towards a surprising conclusion is the one between Cece and Schmidt. Admitting that their connection is a nice thing can only lead to them moving forward towards a real relationship, something else I believe it's happening way too soon. But it was fun watching Schmidt take control of things for a change and have enough balls to be able to say no to Cece (and to Cece's boobs).
With the next episode suggestively titled "Secrets", it's only fair to believe the gang will find out about Schmidt and Cece sneaking behind their backs, and I can't wait to see how they will react to the news. Will they do a Winston, as in, "No one in the entire world can explain that", or will they be happy for the lovely couple?New Girl 1x17: Fancyman (Part 1) Back to Season 1
