New Girl 1x04: Naked

Original Air Date: 1 November 2011

Storyline: Jess accidentally walks in on Nick naked, sending his self-confidence to an all-time low - just after an attractive co-worker agrees to go out on a date with him. Meanwhile, Winston becomes obsessed with learning pop-culture references online.Best Quote:

Schmidt: Just suck in your gut
Nick: What gut?
Jess: The little pooch where you keep your extra cookies.

She's Adorkable!I accidentally saw Nick's pee-pee... and his bubbles.Review: I so desperately want to love this show, you have no idea how much! I love all kinds of nerds and what could be more fun than to watch Zoey Deschanel playing one, right? See, the thing is, New Girl is unfortunately looking more like a jaded show than one that just premiered. In the beginning, especially when it comes to sitcoms, one expects some originality; of course, it’s hard these days to do something that hasn't been done before, but with such a competition, a show needs to stay fresh in order to survive, especially when it doesn't have an established fan base that might look beyond a bad installment because they already love the characters and the general plot.

I’m not saying New Girl is bad. This episode was somewhere in the middle, but the pilot set that high of an expectation that the following three felt like a downer. I don’t know if it’s because Damon Wayans Jr. left the cast – though that is a very big part of it. But the plot feels random and I have issues following it from end to end and that is definitely not a good thing for an episode that lasts 20 minutes.
Among all the chaos – mainly pertaining to Winston’s arc, which could have been developed better, but instead was limited to clichés -, there were a couple of hilarious moments. The best one must be Nick’s sexy dance. I have never seen reggae music used in that particular way before. There’s something hot about a man who strips in front of a mirror on Jamaican rhythms, all I want is go to the beach and have a Mojito. Or whatever umbrella drinks there are in Jamaica.
Unfortunately, as much as I usually love Jess, her behavior after  seeing Nick’s "pee pee" (really, are there people who are unable to say "penis" in real life?) made her the most annoying person on the planet. No, Jess, people don’t always need to share their feelings. The feeling stick, or whatever it was called, is a bad idea even in kindergarten; why would it work with adults? Also, her complete lack of boundaries is astonishing. I was amazed in the previous episodes at the fact that they pretty much share the bathroom and that was already too much for me to handle (in all honesty, I’m not a person who handles roommates well, so every crossing of normal boundaries is annoying to me), but entering Nick’s room without knocking, then following him around to discuss the fact that she’d seen him naked and thinking that the solution to their problems is letting him see her "gumbo pot" was more than I could bare. It wasn’t funny, not even a little bit.
Nick’s inability to have sex with the hot barmaid cracked me up, but her character was actually funnier than the whole situation. People using that much sarcasm in real life should be put to death, but on a TV show, it’s pretty hilarious. I also like Lake Bell quite a bit, so I might be subjective here.
I currently have a love-hate relationship with Schmidt. He’s a douche, but the level of douchiness varies from week to week; sometimes he’s amusing, sometimes he’s not. This time, I loved him. He’s so determined in his idea that being Nick’s best friend means he has to see his penis that I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. What if Nick is in an accident and Schmidt has to identify his body, but the only recognizable part is his weenie? Of course the guy has to know what it looks like. But the best part in all this was approximating its length with his hands and asking Jess to "just say when".  Totally hilarious!
I won’t even go into Winston’s arc, it was completely boring and useless, as is the character. The writers need to give him purpose soon, otherwise he will be able to bring down this show singlehandedly.  New Girl 1x03: Wedding Back to Season 1
