Natural Remedies to Relieve an Upset Stomach

By Craftycrunchymama
Natural Remedies to Relieve an Upset StomachI have been sick with an upset stomach for a couple of days now so I thought I would go ahead and share some of the natural things I do to help. These are the things that I have tried and that have worked for my family and I for many years. If you have any to add, please feel free to share in the comments below. I would love to add more things to my upset stomach arsenal.
Natural Remedies to Relieve an Upset Stomach1. Peppermint Tea
Whenever I start to have a hint of digestive upset, I reach for my peppermint tea. Peppermint aids in digestion by improving the flow of bile and is also very soothing because of the warmth and nice smell.
Natural Remedies to Relieve an Upset Stomach2. Peppermint Oil
If the peppermint tea alone doesn't do the trick, I will sometimes double up on the peppermint by placing some oil on the source of the pain (the stomach). I will typically wet a washcloth with warm water, pour a couple of drops on it, place it on my stomach and lay down. If I can't lay down I will wear a tight tank top and place it under that while I walk around the house. You don't need the washcloth, but I like the warmth of it.
Natural Remedies to Relieve an Upset Stomach3. Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is known for it's ability to absorb toxins related with drug overdose. It works the same way for sickness (especially food poisoning!). It also traps air bubbles and helps to relieve bloating and gas. I strongly urge you to get the powder form as it works faster and is more effective. It really doesn't taste like much of anything and it has a little but of a gritty texture (like when you used to eat dirt as a child). If you are really squeamish of it in powder form, the pills are better than nothing, but the powder is the way to go if you can! I use a teaspoon or two in a full glass of water and that usually does the trick for me. I can't recommend this enough!
* Just a quick note on the charcoal - too much of it can make you constipated so start slow and make sure to drink lots of water with it.
Also, charcoal can absorb medications making them less effective so talk to your doctor about a safe time period between taking your medication and taking charcoal.

4. Digestive Bitters
This is the mother of all things that will help your stomach. If you have never heard of bitters before let me explain - and yes it does taste bitter. Bitters is a mixture of herbs in an alcohol base. Bitters are said to aid digestion because as soon as it hits your lips, your stomach secretes juices that aid in digestion. Gentian is one of the more popular and effective herbs contained in bitters. It is a common practice in Europe to consume bitters with meals to aid in digestion - especially fatty foods.
I will not lie to you, this is some really strong stuff. I  mean it is 40% alcohol. Do not drink it slowly, just get it down and I promise it will help. I find that I only need a few swallows before it starts to work. I have never drank a whole bottle at once.
I hope this has helped you find ways to naturally relieve an upset stomach. I would love to hear your natural remedies as well!
*Disclaimer* - I am not a doctor and would not want you to take my advice as medical advice. Please contact your doctor before trying these things to make sure it is ok, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have any underlying conditions, or are taking any medications.
