National Stock Exchange (NSE) & NIFTY: A General Idea

What is National Stock Exchange (NSE)?

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) was promoted under the command of the Government of India by the leading financial institutions and further incorporated in Nov 1992 as a tax paying company. Under the Security Contracts (Regulation) Act 1956, it was recognized as a Stock Exchange, and in June 1994, it started operations in the Wholesale Debt Market (WDM) segment. The NSE started Capital market (Equity) segment operation in Nov 1994, while Derivative segment operation was started in June 2000. The NSE is located at Mumbai in India,   and as on Dec 2010, there are over 1552 listings with a market capitalization of around US$1.59 trillion. The NSE is the most popular exchange like BSE (Bombay stock exchange) which provides a market platform for the share transactions.

What is NIFTY?

NIFTY stands for National Stock Exchange’s Fifty. It is basically an indicator of all the major companies of the 9th largest stock exchange in the world i.e. NSE (National Stock Exchange). . IfNIFTY goes up, it indicates that the prices of all the top and actively traded stocks in the NSE have gone up. And on the contrary, if NIFTY goes down, it indicates that the prices of all the top and actively traded stocks in the NSE have gone down. NIFTY consists of fifty top traded stocks in National Stock Exchange, which may vary from time to time depending on many factors considered by NSE. A NIFTY fifty stock list is as follows:-
