Myth Busters: Common Myths About Men

By Shauntee @shaunteebattie

Common Myths About MenDuring my holiday vacation, I got a chance to hang out my sister for a girls day out. One of the conversations we had was common myths about men. We got on the subject and it actually became a pretty funny conversation. As I think about some of the myths I’ve heard about men over the years, I begin to wonder who in the hell thought of this stuff. Did someone just wake up one morning and say “hey, if a man keep his car clean, that means he’s good to his woman”. And just like that, it begins to spread like wildfire being repeated over and over again! The strange theory behind myths is that they exist without factual evidence or validity. I’m not sure how some of these common myths about men came to be, but I can assure you from personal experience that some need to be buried.

I’ve starred in a couple of episodes of the Myth Busters and wasn’t aware that I was even on the show!

Myth #1: If a Man is good to his Momma He’ll be good to you

OK, so let me get this straight. I’ve been dating a guy for 2 weeks and I should expect to be treated like his momma. You can’t compete with the woman who brought him in this world. With that being said, a man could treat his momma like a queen and treat you like shit. There’s a thin line here because we need to decipher whether he’s just good to his momma or just a plain ole momma’s boy. I was once in a relationship with a guy who was not close to his momma at all but he treated me well. When I finally met her, I understood why. Myth busted!

Myth #2: A Big Nose and Big feet = A Big Penis

I remember hearing this myth while I was still in high school. I also remember excessively looking at men noses and feet as a result of hearing this. Don’t you just miss those young, dumb, and naïve days? Shoe size and the size of someone’s nose have absolutely nothing to do with the size of a penis. I learned this when I was twenty years old while dating a man with big feet and a big nose. Needless to say that myth was definitely busted!

Myth #3: Older Men Know How to Treat a Woman

Maybe 15 years ago this had some truth to it. But today not so much; expecting an older man to treat you better is a thing of the past. I’ve honestly seen men in their twenties who have more stability then some men in their 40’s and 50’s. I have also seen younger men be much more supportive and respectful toward women. I’m not sure what caused a shift in the treatment that some older men now give younger women or women in general but I got six words for you, “you’re too old for that shit”.

Myth #4: Men Have No Emotions

In defense to the whole men have no emotions myth; I must say that there are plenty of women who can use some work on their emotions as well. No one is without emotion unless they have some sort of psychological disorder. Men just hide their emotions better and don’t get emotional about all the things that women get emotional about. Men pick and chose the women they want to show emotion to. Believe it or not, men get their heart broken too and become guarded just like women.

Myth #5: Men don’t like to commit

If things don’t go as planned after continuously dating someone; we sometimes make ourselves believe that they have a fear of commitment. In reality, that’s bullshit! He simply did not want to commit to you. Often when this happens we beat ourselves up trying to figure out what it is about us that he didn’t see as being relationship worthy. Don’t do that to yourself because in the long run you’re better off. Bottom line, most men are not afraid of commitment; you’re just not the one.

Are there any myths you’ve heard about men that you found wasn’t true?
