What did we learn from last nights VMAs? America loves Ed Sheeran which is cool, he's not your run of your mill popstar (and the video for Sing is pretty ace!), the Kardashian's adore Sam Smith, also not your typical L.A. dreamboat and a Brit, rock music doesn't exist in 2014, I'm a huge fan of Lorde, Royals is an amazing song but it is a pop song, then again, who would you give the 'Best Rock Video' award to when one of the nominations was for Arctic Monkeys' Do I Wanna Know which didn't even have a video! Although Beyonce and Jay-Z's kissing on stage apparently quashed rumours of a divorce and Nicki Minaj's costume malfunction have grabbed the headlines what we should congratulate MTV and the LA elite for is the respect paid to Robin Williams, the powerful words about the recent race war in Ferguson and Miley Cyrus' gesture to help the homeless community in Hollywood, it was a message that nobody in the building wanted to hear but told some home-truths for the rich and famous. Well played Miley, she isn't as dumb as everybody likes to think.
Anyway, that sidetracked the whole point of this post, which was that award ceremonies don't really award the best 'video' and, although it didn't make it on to the main show OK Go actually won the 'Best Visual Effects' award. Yes, a guitar band a DID win something but in this case it definitely was for the video and not the song, the song is pretty rubbish...
OK Go have always done great videos, they just don't do great songs but luckily for them, MTV who were the first real institute for pushing the promotional video when the channel first launched in the eighties saw their efforts and gave them a gong for The Writing's On The Wall.
