IC1's might have already received praised from Alan McGee and The Libertines but this new London five-piece were brought down to ground on the first night of The Family Rain tour. The nationwide jaunt kicked off at the Queens Social Club on a cold Thursday night didn't give off the warmest start for the openers as their short set began in front of just a handful of people. It wasn't a a wasted journey for this promising band as people not only drifted in but they took note too.
This is a band on the rise, there is no doubt about that. They are slick, polished, very polished for a band who are still pretty fresh to the game, look the part, there's a confidence in there (which could be mistaken for cockiness) and tunes, big tunes. Beautiful Ugly has that Kings Of Leon stadium rock vibe running through it as emotions spill out of the front mans mouth with passion and heart, punk influences come through on the energetic Wack Jack and Growing Up, Growing Down has that noughties indie sound about it but it was closing number Never Together which really shone.
Apart from the shit name and the front mans Tom Meighan copycat presence this band has future, their solid live performance and mix of anthems and songs full of energetic bursts are an exciting prospect!
Fortunately the headliners the venue was much fuller, the crowd slightly drunker and up for the Bath band. The 'family' in The Family Rain is relevant with the three piece being made up of twins and a brother, all hairy faced and share a love of rock 'n' roll.
The brotherly bond really pays off on-stage, they read each others minds as they powered through big riffs with bluesy influences. Friction deserves to be played on much bigger stages as it slides through with handclaps whilst Pushing It is quirky, you can hear Jack White's influence here and there's an air of Black Keys coming through on the powerfully brilliant Trust Me...I'm A Genius.
With the bands debut album Under The Volcano set for release in February the time is now for the Walter siblings.
