We might be still waiting for the next rock revolution but 2014 brings some exciting Anglo-American prospects hoping to inspire a generation. There's Skaters, who I've been championing for the past eighteen months and Drowners whose debut drops tomorrow.
Fronted by Brit pretty boy and Alexa Chung's beau, Matt Hitt who brings quintessential English influences to the table that blends nicely with New York cool. The self-titled LP is as much The Smiths as it is The Strokes, balances out The Beach Boys with The Beatles whilst a Spring-infused tempo lusts along perfect guitar pop with jabs of punk thrown in for good measure. It feels live and raw right from the start with muffled vocals and a bouncy beat on opener Ways To a Phrase A Rejection, if a track like that doesn't fill you with excitement then you might be dead inside.
Long Hair is full of charm before Luv, Hold Me Down sucks you in, Drowners deliver fresh, snappy tunes in abundance. As the album tells tales of love and heartbreak you are swept away by Hitt's way with words but it is how they leave his mouth, poetically honest like he's talking to you, heart-to-heart. Unzip Your Harrington sways with nostalgia, Pure Pleasure rattles through with punchy guitar riffs and a rhythmic drum beat, then there's Bar Chat which comes from noughties indie roots.
January is almost over but if you are needing just one last boost to cure the New Year hangover then give this a spin, it'll wipe away the cobwebs.
