#music Ariana Grande - My Everything

The success of Ariana Grande in 2014 is no mistake. The former Nickelodeon stars music career didn't really take off with the release of her soul-inspired debut Yours Truly but twelve months on it is a very different story. The 21 year old has already had three hit singles before the follow up My Everything has even been released!

It has all been dealt with very cleverly, this album boasts a generous a mouth watering list of collaborators which aren't the obvious picks but an exciting selection. In the past we have seen Miley hook up with Britney, Britney borrow Madonna and Justin team with Michael Jackson, there's no reason to knock those but you could say they are a little predictable, compared to Ariana's. You expect the pocket sized singer to be your typical bubblegum pop star but with a cast of new hip hop icons Iggy Azalea (Problem), Childish Gambino (Break Your Heart Right Back), Big Sean (Best Mistake), A$AP Ferg (Hands On Me) and The Weeknd (Love Me /harder) all featuring on the record whilst DJs Zedd (Break Free) and Cashmere Cat (Be My Baby) make Ariana come across cooler and more relevant than many of her competitors.

It isn't just the artists on the record, the songwriters brought in for the record is pretty elite too, from David Guetta to Harry Styles (yes HARRY STYLES!) and Max Martin all helped the latest pop princess. Who ever the puppet master is pulling her strings they have done a cracking job but Ariana got her hands dirty too!
My Everything isn't all about this guests, the tunes, and Ariana's powerful vocals deserve a lot of credit too. Comparisons to Mariah Carey have been flung about a fair bit, I don't like Mariah's over-exaggerated tone but Ariana subtly feeds texture and emotion in to the songs without any forced wailing evolved and the only real 'Mariah moment' comes on the title track.
The follow up to Yours Truly covers a lot of ground, the Zedd produced beats on Break Free are big enough to fill dance floors worldwide, Break Your Heart Right Back samples Diana Ross' I'm Coming Out and despite the influx of rappers the record never really feels like it is trying to be hip hop at any moment. Although One Last Time, Be My Baby and Why Try sound like they have been given the 2014 pop formula (needless amount of synths) they still stand strong. Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart, penned by Harry Styles is a gentle moment that is bold as the big beats are replaced by strings and a soul. Then there's the big ones, Problem which is simply brilliant POP and the cut throat break up conversation, Best Mistake where My Everything really peaks

This is a star who also features on Jessie J's Bang Bang with Nicki Minaj proving that at least for a few months 2014 will be all about the former Cat Valentine.
So, is this just another pop album? Yes, but it has enough 'moments' on it to tide the world over till Taylor drops 1989 in October.
