University of Mumbai was set up in 1857 by John Wilson. In keeping with the town’s name, the University was called University of Bombay. The university was set up by an Act of the Legislative Assembly (approx.) (in the British Era) along with universities in Madras and Calcutta. The university was formally started in 1859. The name University of Mumbai was called so only in 1996 when the name of the town was changed to Mumbai.
The motto of the university is “The fruit of Learning is Good Character and Righteous Conduct”. The university has always followed the motto to the core of all its functions.The current Chancellor of this public university is Governor of Maharashtra and the vice chancellor is Rajan. M.Wulekar.The university campus is at Kalina, Santa Cruz, in Mumbai. The university is recognised by accreditation bodies like NAAC, UGC and AIU.
Post independence the government passed the Bombay University Act of 1953, which regulated the powers, functions and all operational features of the University of Mumbai.Initially the university campus was at the Bombay fort but was later moved to Kalina. The fort campus is still used as a base for the administrative work of the university. The fort campus has the famous Rajabai Clock tower which has developed to become a symbol of the University of Mumbai
