Movin’ On Up: Are You Ready For A Bigger Home?

By Lamamma @LAmamma1

It doesn’t matter which way you look at it, moving from a pokey little apartment in the center of town to a sprawling home that you finally own yourself is the ultimate dream. When you moved into your bijou little space, you made it your own. Sometimes, a smaller home can be amazing – especially when you can reach the toaster from the dining table! The thing is, life moves on and so do you. As you grow up and your circumstances change, your starter home starts to feel a little cramped, a little small and a lot like it’s part of the past.

Moving from a starter home to a bigger one is a big adjustment, but before you make the leap you need to do a little research. You firstly need to work out what companies can help you move from one place to another and you can click for more and get your research done easily there! You then need to decide where to move to. Often, people think that making their furniture fit in a smaller space is the problem – but the reverse can also be true. When you are so used to having little space to manoeuvre, a larger home can feel rather overwhelming to live in. There are some things you must consider before making the leap and trading up:

Can You Afford It? It’s an obvious question when you think about it – there’s not much point in trading up for a home that going to be too expensive to maintain. It’s not just the mortgage to think about – you need to ensure you can afford the utilities on a larger home as it will take more to power and heat. Your current mortgage may be a really comfortable one, so if you can manage the larger mortgage then you should go for it; just don’t stretch yourself.

Are Your Finances Stable? When you get your mortgage approved, you may be sitting on a comfortable salary with your job. Is that job a stable one? It’s an important question to ask yourself before you saddle yourself with a larger mortgage payment, as the last thing you need is to move into the new house and find out your job is on the list for redundancy.

Can You Sell The Apartment? Ideally, you will be able to sell your first home before you move into the new one. The money you make from the apartment could make a huge dent in the things you need for the new house. Getting in the real estate agents and getting your home valued is a good place to start.

How Will Life Change? Graduating from a bijou starter home and into a larger dream house is a big adjustment, in the same way going from the bustle of the city and into the suburbs can change things for you. Be ready for good changes and you can enjoy having neighbours that want to socialise and get to know you!

A bigger home means a bigger mortgage and the chance to buy new furniture. It also means a big change. Make sure you’re ready!
