Movie Awards Dates to Remember – 2016 Edition

Posted on the 06 January 2016 by Weminoredinfilm.com @WeMinoredInFilm

It’s the time of year again when every other day brings news of yet another organization delivering their nominations for the best films of 2015.  Yesterday, it was the Producers Guild of America.  Today, it’ll be the Writers Guild.  Of course, it’s all building up the Academy Awards where it’s entirely possible we’ll have a repeat of the 2010 Oscars when the film which absolutely everyone had seen (Avatar) lost to the film which pretty much no one had seen (Hurt Locker).  This year, that could be Star Wars losing to Spotlight.  Then again, Star Wars probably won’t even get nominated after being snubbed by the Producers Guild, and popular movies like The Martian and Mad Max: Fury Road each seem to have a fair shot at both being nominated and actually winning.

Of course, by this point most of the major critics associations (AFI, National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle) have already delivered their picks.  So, I probably should have done this list last month, but as of right now here are the major film awards dates to keep in mind as we enter the final stretch of the weirdest and most unpredictable awards season in recent memory:

Writers Guild Awards Nominations Announced: Today (1/6) – UPDATED – Here are the nominees.

British Academy of Film & Televisions (BAFTA) Nominations Announced: Friday (1/8)

Film Independent Spirits Awards Broadcast (on IFC): February 27 – The nominees

Note: I could be wrong about some of the awards ceremonies as far as whether or not they’ll be broadcast, but I am going off of the information which was readily available on each organization’s official website.
