MONSTER & MADMAN #1 Review

Posted on the 11 March 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

The secret history of Jack The Ripper and Frankenstein’s Monster. Interesting concept. Two very popular characters in the horror genre get a series designed around an untold story of their existence. This could get scary.

The book caught my attention because of the monster portion. Frankenstein’s Monster to be exact. It’s a common misconception to call the big dude with bolts in his neck Frankenstein. In fact, Frankenstein was the doctor who created the monster. Now thanks to a coworker, everyone calls me Frankenstein at my job because MY name is Frank. Thanks Phil!

ANYWAY….

This book shows us the Monster in blizzard like conditions. We see a different side of him. He seems monster like but not like he is depicted on screen. He gets aboard a ship and the captain tries to hire the Monster as muscle. The book ends with the Monster running into what I believe is Jack The Ripper.

This is only the second horror book I have read but is the most interesting yet. I think the concept of this and where is could go is beyond me. Who would have though to put these two characters in a story together? The book is mostly narrative with little dialog. The art is very dark and not like your typical comic (although similar to the last horror comic so there might be a trend). This book has me wanting to know more and I need to see where it goes. Frankenstein’s Monster has always been my favorite of the old Universal Monsters. This take is completely different than that but just as interesting. I am looking forward to seeing what part Jack plays in this.
